Defining Depression

Depression:
is a state of being depressed and it is a condition that easily and slowly takes hold of a person so that all they are left with and can feel is sometimes sadness, loneliness, gloominess, despair, and a low sense of self-confidence due to lack of energy and liveliness. As a result, people sometimes embody the feeling that revolves around thoughts and even attempts of suicide and death. Depression easily breaks down a person so that they sometimes feel that they are all alone and abandoned. Depression may sometimes make it hard to get through daily life, to sleep, or to even think correctly. Depression can occur to anyone, sometimes it is curable but sometimes it can't be escaped.

Hi there-
Thanks for your comment on my blog, www.depressionmarathon.blogspot.com. I encourage you to continue reading more of my past posts to get answers to many of the questions you posed. I chose to return the comment on this post because, while this is a decent summary of depression, I encourage you to edit the last sentence of your post. Depression is an illness. To suggest that recovery from this illness has anything to do with a person's "will" or willpower or character is a dangerous stigmatization. It is akin to suggesting that a person with a brain tumor (cancer) can recover if his or her will to do so is strong enough. Obviously, cancer cannot be cured by willpower alone, and likewise some people with seemingly little character or will-to-live recover despite themselves! The same is true of depression--a biological brain disease--no different than a brain tumor. Recovery depends on getting the appropriate treatment, and while a person's attitude is an important element of treatment, it ultimately is not the only determining factor.
Thanks.
